Self-Care Tips For Mums

If you are like me and you take care of everyone in your life except for yourself, try some of the self-care tips I shared below. It's not selfish. It's essential. Taking care of ourselves requires conscious self-compassionbecause we recognize that we’re not perfect and we know we’re still worthy of love and belonging. We are human; we may not like everything or agree with everything, accept everything or meet every expectation, but we can still love and be loved.

Push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. Go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.

Push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.

Get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms and garlic, fry an egg, make crispy bacon and an extra sausage. Sit and eat it and do nothing else.

Stretch. Start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. Roll your head. Stretch your fingers. Stretch everything.

I find this great video for stretching is so great. Being someone that struggles to find time in the day to stretch all the muscles i've been using or not using (if i'm at the desk editing lots of beautiful images), when it comes to bedtime this is my chance to actually rewind. I often light a dragons blood incense cone and play this video while i'm sitting in bed. I came across it a while ago but it's just short enough and you can do it on your bed so i mean why not?

Buy a 1L water bottle. Start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.

Buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. Write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. No detail is too small.

Strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. Put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. Make your bed in full.

Organise your room. Fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, vacuum the floor. Light a beautiful candle.

A recent craze is Marie Kondo who has released a netflix documentary show where she visits homes with toddlers, losing a beloved etc.. and helps them find joy in cleaning and decluttering. I really recommend watching the ones with toddlers which I think is episode one on netflix. It may spark you to declutter your clothes or books or children's toys and give you that buzz you're looking for. Hello Magazine did a wee top tips below from her series so if you don't have time to watch the shows, click the link below and you'll get the idea of how to do your room.

Have a luxurious bath with your favourite music playing. Wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. Lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.

I couldn't recommend enough to get a Lush bubble bar, no not a bath bomb.. a bubble bar. A bubble bar is much thicker in the bath and melts in your hand which is satisfying in itself. I find a bubble bar has much more impact on your skin and the bath feels completely like silk. Absolutely glorious. Highly recommend the comforter bubble bar, it's glorious.

Push yourself to go for a walk. Take your headphones and walk. Smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back.

Message old friends with personal jokes. Reminisce. Suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. Push yourself to follow through.

Think long and hard about what interests you. Crime? Sex? Boarding school? Long-forgotten romance etiquette? Find a book about it and read it. There is a book about literally everything.

Most importantly this year just learn to really love yourself. Go out wearing no make up, go out wearing something comfy instead of glamorous. The world world won't end because you aren't perfect, nobody is. Life is what you make it and far too short to have to deal with bad vibes on a weekly basis. Just love yourself.
