So then, why is photography so expensive? Here’s what you are really getting when you pay for a professional photographer (and what you miss out on when you don’t). Photography Sessions Are Filled with “Hidden Hours.”
When a photographer charges £200 for a one-hour session, they’re not charging £200 an hour. At the very minimum, professional photographers typically spend at least three times that on a session.
While the client may only see the photographer for an hour, there was likely:
Over an hour talking to the client, booking you in the diary and ensuring you fully understand the package and what to expect and preparing the paperwork and taking the deposit + Over an hour of planning the shoot + half an hour to set up the equipment + the actual hour at the shoot + about an hour to load and choose the best images + another two hours minimum to edit the images + an hour to load the images online or form a slideshow of the images to present in the viewing session + Then sending the images off with the correct settings to ensure best quality with the suppliers + then delivering the images or arranging collection by the client.
That One hour session becomes just above minimum wage per hour. Simply put, you’re not just paying for the actual photograph; you’re paying for time, quality and expertise. The expertise means we have had so much training and work and experience that we can capture some beautiful images. Below is an image of a before and after of a touch of editing.

Now let's not forget the gear and endless props involved in professional photography, now especially as I specialise in Newborn, Baby and Family Photography there is endless props.
Props to get babies attention, props for all seasons, props for safety, props to sit on, props to sit in, props in the background to accentuate the photograph, props to put on baby, props to but around baby. This all goes alongside regular training workshops that the photographer will go on to ensure their quality of service and work is in line with their costings. Any creative person will aim to always improve their work.
Running a photography business isn't cheap but it's very rewarding when you get those photographs that are cherished for generations to come. Professional Photographers will have contracts in place, ask you questions, and make sure the process is going smoothly for you from beginning to end. If you have any questions or concerns about your shoot, they’re willing to talk things out with you. Definitely ask questions before you book to make sure you’re a good match with your photographer. Check out their website, their blog, see what other people are saying on their social media sites. Make sure they are a legitimate business before you put money down on them. There are neseccary things that need paid for when running a self-employed businesses such as the commercial property itself that you have to pay for along with rates and tax and electric We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs cost so much more than the ones that you get from your local printing shop.
